Iron Fish Distillery is Michigan's first farm distillery, founded in 2016 by four co-founders—Richard Anderson, Sarah Anderson, David Wallace, and Heidi Bolger—on a 120-acre parcel of farmland near Thompsonville in Benzie County. The distillery sits within the Betsie River watershed, home to iconic steelhead and trout, and takes its name from this natural heritage.

The founding story began in 2014 when Richard Anderson and David Wallace, both lovers of fine Scotch, traveled to Scotland together. Inspired by the Scottish farm distillery tradition, they returned to Michigan to build a similar grain-to-glass operation rooted in the land. Today, Iron Fish grows grain on the estate and sources additional supplies from nearby Michigan farms, operating under the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program for sustainable practices.

The distillery's most celebrated product line is the Mad Angler series—bourbon, rye, and bottled-in-bond expressions aged at least four years and made from Michigan-grown grain. The Mad Angler mash bill uses 51% Iron Fish estate-grown Jupiter winter wheat, 26% organic yellow corn, 14% malted barley, and 9% estate rye. Mad Angler Bourbon is bottled at 47% ABV and won Double Platinum at the 2024 ASCOT Taste Competition.
The Four Cask Bourbon is another signature offering—a blended bourbon finished in rum, cognac, sherry, and maple whiskey barrels for a richly layered profile, bottled at 45% ABV. In early 2026, David Wallace and Heidi Bolger consolidated full ownership of Iron Fish, entering a new chapter for the distillery. On-site accommodations and a tasting room make Iron Fish a destination distillery in northern Michigan.
